Biography

Robert Zang is a Senior Trademark Attorney, based in Beijing.

Robert is a seasoned expert in the field of intellectual property, with experience of over fourteen years advising clients on trademark protection strategies, dispute resolution, and the enforcement of non-traditional trademarks. He holds dual qualifications as a patent attorney and a lawyer in China.

Robert has advised leading international brands in the technology, fashion, entertainment, hospitality, and sports sectors, providing comprehensive brand protection solutions covering strategic portfolio planning, enforcement strategy development, and the resolution of complex trademark matters. He has achieved notable success in handling challenging cases such as invalidation actions and bad-faith filings, with some of his cases recognized as ‘Model Cases of Trademark Review and Adjudication’ by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).

Robert assists companies in building robust intellectual property protection systems by developing tailored strategies for brands at different stages of their lifecycle and establishing effective brand defence mechanisms. He also actively participates in international professional exchanges, including serving as a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA)’s Bulletin Committee.

As a core team member, Robert has handled cases involving:

  • Advising a renowned luxury brand in a complex trademark invalidation case, successfully overcoming challenges related to the five-year statutory limit, res judicata, and the recognition of well-known trademarks -- 2019 Model Cases of Trademark Review and Adjudication by the China National Intellectual Property Administration.
  • Advising a leading sportswear brand and an international hotel brand on long-term trademark protection strategies. Through years of strategic implementation, the success rate in opposition and invalidation proceedings far exceeded the national average published by CNIPA.
  • Advising a well-known luxury brand in a complex invalidation proceeding, successfully invalidating a maliciously registered trademark that had been in use for over a decade, while also securing recognition of the client’s mark as a well-known trademark.
